Frequently Asked Questions
What ages is TAASC designed for?
The American Adventure Service Corps is designed for youth ages 6 through 18. The Asheville TAASC program currently has the following groups:
8-12 year olds – Younger Group
13-18 year olds – Older Group
6-7 year old girls – Younger Girls TAASC
8-12 year old girls – Older Girls TAASC
Is TAASC co-ed?
Yes, our Older Teenage program is co-ed. We also have a Girls specific program for younger girls.
Is TAASC non-discriminatory?
Of course! Membership is open to any youth member and family who are committed to being active.
How do members join?
Download the application forms from our website, fill them out and send them in! The best way to check out the program is to come to one of our meetings, meet the other kids and see what we do.
Can Students join at any time?
Yes – we have a rolling admissions, so students are free to join at any time during the year!
Is it safe?
The programs are supervised by experienced professional, outdoor educators, all have extensive experience working for Outward Bound and other outdoor leadership programs. There is risk in participation in adventurous activities, but state-of-the-art equipment, safety policies, quality staff and training, results in an organization with the highest safety rating.
What equipment do I need?
You will need to provide your own food and clothing. You will also need your own personal cup/bowl/spoon; water bottles and headlamp. TAASC supplies all the other necessary outdoor gear such as kayaks, canoes, backpacks, sleeping bags, tents, etc. Many members get so turned on to the outdoor skills that they begin to acquire their own equipment.
How often does TAASC meet?
There are weekly TAASC meetings for the different age groups, and monthly service projects, and adventure trips. Check the Schedule for more information.
What if my son or daughter wants to join but they are involved in numerous other extra-curricular activities?
We have found that to be an active and committed TAASC member, a young person should maybe only be involved in one or two other activities (outside of school) in addition to TAASC. Doing two sports and TAASC is often too much. Questionnaires to TAASC members indicate that in their opinion TAASC has been more valuable to their lives than sports or other youth programs because of the high levels of adventure, service and fun.
Is TAASC associated with a religious movement, service group or other youth organization?
No. TAASC is an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Can parents go on trips?
Yes of course! We have a good deal of positive parent participation on the age 8 to 12 years old activities. Some of the more eager and active parents come along on the older kid trips. We love family involvement, but there comes a time when the kids need to develop on their own and do some activities without their parents along. So we trust your judgement on this.
We operate on a quarterly system. The tuition is due on a quarterly basis. Please note that students may join TAASC at any time of the year and we simply pro-rate the tuition based on date you sign up.
Is Summer quarter tuition different?
Yes – in the summer we offer multi-day expeditions and the tuition is different to regular quarters – contact us for summer details
Drop out and Cancellation Policy
We know TAASC may not be for everyone. As our tuition is per quarter we do not have any refund available if a student drops out or is unable to attend trips for any reason.
Is any Financial Aid available?
Yes, there is limited financial aid available. Contact us for more information
