Are your kids looking for Adventure?

August 21, 2013 By Greg Gillett

Any new interested kids and parents are welcome to join us at one of our regular meetings to find out more about TAASC! It’s the best way to see what we’re about, meet other students and see if it’s something you want to be part of.

TAASC is an exciting and innovative year round outdoor leadership, adventure/service program that allows students to develop confidence, group awareness, leadership skills and personal responsibility, all the while having fun with new friends.

“The greatest thing about TAASC for me as a parent has been that I’ve seen my child’s confidence increase dramatically. He has conquered any fears that he had in the beginning and now his leadership qualities are emerging. The folks at TAASC have given him challenges and experiences that have helped shape his character and develop skills that will serve him well in the future. Also I think it is great that he gets to know other kids outside his immediate circle”. ~Mary Jane Keever, TAASC parent

Join TAASC for adventure and get out and play: climbing, paddling, hiking, caving, mountain biking and helping others through service.

Summer 2023

Wolves & Foxes: 5-day Summer Backpacking Trip

June 12 – 16

Tuition is $690

This is a 4 day backpacking expedition through the beautiful Grayson Highlands. The boys will really develop their campcraft skills like cooking, cleanup, setting up tents and packing them all up. Personal responsibility is a big part of these type of trips as the boys develop systems to look after their things and be organized. On the 5th day we have a really fun celebration day biking the Virginia Creeper trail into Damascus!

Redwood Girls: 5-day Summer Backpacking Trip

June 26 – 30

Tuition is $690

This summer adventure includes a beautiful 4 day backpacking expedition through Grayson Highlands. The girls will love travelling through this area as a lot of it is above tree line and it also comes with wild ponies! The girls will also be able to bring all their outdoor skills together to be successful on this trip. The final day is a celebration day biking down the Virginia Creeper Trail!

Oaks Girls: 5-day Adventure Day Camp

June 19 – 23

Tuition is $490

This is a fun day camp experience where the Oaks will go out each day on a different adventure before returning home each evening. Here’s the itinerary (which is subject to change depending on weather etc)

  1. Canoeing day on Lake James – practicing and learning paddling strokes, how to steer the boat straight, canoe rescues and lots of fun swimming!
  2. Day hike up to Mt Mitchell – explore this high elevation area, find the lost plane as well as follow a fun scavenger hunt along the way.
  3. Rock climbing day – another opportunity to develop both belaying and climbing skills
  4. Caving adventure – a classic day to Worleys to adventure around the cave!
  5. Day adventure hike and snorkeling – we’ll be hiking into some beautiful areas where there are awesome rivers and pools to snorkel in to see what’s below the surface!

Dogwoods 5-day Adventure Backpacking and Climbing

July 10 – 14

Tuition is $690

We’ll start out with a 3-day backpacking expedition to get things going and set the tone for a fun week in the wilderness. One of the options is to travel through an area with lots of swimming potential along the way, which is always nice on a hot summer day! We will finish up with 2 days of climbing at the Table Rock area. So many options for climbing, rappelling and exploring vertical areas!

Foxes & Wolves: 5-day Adventure Day Camp

July 17 – 21

Tuition is $490

Another fun day camp for the boys of these 2 groups! We’ll go out each day on a different adventure before returning home each evening. Here’s the itinerary (which is subject to change depending on weather etc)

  1. Canoeing on Lake James – learning and practicing our paddling strokes and overall canoe skills, plus lots of fun swimming!
  2. Canoeing on Lake James – because 2 days is better than one! We’ll be able to do a mini expedition after learning the basics the day before.
  3. Mountain Bike adventure – Fun day on the Fonta Flora bike path that goes around parts of Lake James. This is mostly flat and perfect for beginner bikers. Whenever we get too hot – we can jump in the lake!
  4. Rock climbing day – continue to practice our belaying and climbing skills
  5. Day adventure hike and snorkeling – we’ll be hiking in to some beautiful areas where there are awesome rivers and pools to snorkel in to see what’s below the surface!
